Lumens vs Watts vs Lumens-per-Watt, Explained
Watts used to tell you how bright a bulb was. With LED, that is no longer true, and shopping by watts will lead you astray. This guide explains what to actually compare when buying LED lighting.
Lumens measure brightness, watts measure energy use, and lumens per watt measures efficiency. With LED you buy by lumens for output and lumens per watt for efficiency, not by watts.
The Three Numbers
- Lumens: total light output. More lumens, brighter fixture.
- Watts: energy drawn. Lower watts for the same lumens means lower bills.
- Lumens per watt (efficacy): output divided by power. Higher is more efficient.
Why Watts Mislead
An old metal halide fixture might draw 400W for the light a 150W LED now delivers. Comparing watts alone hides that gap. A quality LED today reaches 150 to 200+ lumens per watt.
How to Shop
Decide how many foot-candles your space needs, find fixtures with the lumens to reach it, then compare lumens per watt to keep energy down. The fixture calculator ties output to your room.
Buy by Lumens, Not Watts
We will match the right lumen output and efficiency to your space.
