Color Temperature (Kelvin) Guide for Commercial Spaces

Updated June 2026 · PrimeLights

Color temperature sets the mood and function of a space, from warm and inviting to crisp and clinical. Measured in Kelvin, it is one of the most important specs to get right. This guide shows where each range belongs.

Lower Kelvin is warmer (yellow), higher is cooler (blue-white). Most commercial and industrial spaces land at 4000K to 5000K, with 5000K daylight preferred where color accuracy and crisp visibility matter.

The Kelvin Scale

  • 3000K to 3500K (warm): reception, hospitality, some offices.
  • 4000K (neutral): offices, retail, schools.
  • 5000K (daylight): shops, warehouses, inspection, color work.
  • 6500K (cool daylight): some industrial and task settings.

Matching Space to Kelvin

Offices favor 3500K to 4000K for comfort; see the office guide. Shops, warehouses, and auto body work favor 5000K for crisp, accurate light.

Color Temperature vs CRI

Kelvin is the tone of the light; CRI is how accurately it renders color. Both matter for color-critical work. See CRI explained.
