Foot-Candles by Application: Recommended Light Levels

Updated June 2026 · PrimeLights

Foot-candles measure how much light actually lands on a surface, and getting them right is the difference between a space that works and one that is too dim or wastefully bright. This guide gives target ranges by application.

A foot-candle is one lumen per square foot. Different tasks need different levels: rough storage might need 20, while detailed inspection or color matching can need 75 to 100+.

Target Ranges by Space

Application Typical Target (foot-candles)
Warehouse storage / aisles 20 to 30
Manufacturing, general 30 to 50
Auto repair / service bays 50 to 75
Detailed assembly / inspection 75 to 100+
Paint matching / color-critical 100+
Office / general 30 to 50
Gym / sports 50 to 75+

These are general targets. Local codes, insurer requirements, and task specifics can change them, so treat them as a starting point.

Foot-Candles vs Lumens

Lumens describe total light a fixture emits; foot-candles describe what reaches the work surface after distance and spacing. To turn one into the other for your room, see the lumens vs watts guide and use the fixture calculator.

Applying It

Pick your target, then choose fixtures and spacing to hit it. The application guides, like the warehouse, auto body, and gym guides, recommend fixtures that reach these levels.
