The Biggest Mistakes People Make When Buying LED Shop Lights (and How to Avoid Them)

I’ve been in the commercial lighting industry since 2010. During that time, I’ve helped customers light everything from small garages and hobby shops to warehouses, manufacturing plants, auto shops, and commercial buildings.

After thousands of projects, I’ve noticed something interesting.

The mistakes that cost people the most money usually aren’t buying the wrong brand—they’re making decisions without a plan.

Here are the biggest mistakes I see over and over.

1. Buying Based on Price Alone

Everyone likes saving money. We do too.

But if a fixture seems too good to be true, it usually is.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is buying lights from an unknown online seller simply because the price is lower. The fixtures may work for a few months or even a year, but when something fails, there’s often nobody to call.

The warranty doesn’t get honored.

Replacement parts don’t exist.

The seller disappears.

Now you’re buying the same lights twice.

2. Choosing the Wrong Fixture for the Ceiling Height

This one is incredibly common.

A fixture that performs great at a 12-foot ceiling might perform terribly at 30 feet.

Too much light creates glare.

Too little light creates shadows and frustration.

That’s why we create computerized lighting layouts for our customers before they purchase. Every building is different, and the right fixture depends on ceiling height, building dimensions, and how the space will actually be used.

3. Forgetting About Installation Costs

Many people focus entirely on fixture pricing.

They forget that electricians, lifts, and installation crews are often the expensive part.

If your lights arrive late, your crew is standing around waiting.

That can cost far more than the difference between a bargain fixture and a quality fixture.

We take shipping seriously because we know customers schedule installations around our delivery dates.

4. Ignoring Long-Term Maintenance

This is the question I wish more people asked.

“What happens if this fixture needs service in five or ten years?”

Many integrated LED fixtures use proprietary drivers and circuit boards that become impossible to find after only a few years.

At that point, replacing the entire fixture is often easier than repairing it.

That’s one reason we developed our patented TLED fixture line. Instead of replacing an entire fixture, maintenance is often as simple as replacing a standard LED tube.

Simple.

Fast.

Minimal downtime.

5. Not Talking to a Lighting Expert

This may be the biggest mistake of all.

A five-minute conversation with someone who designs lighting systems every day can save thousands of dollars.

We ask simple questions:

How high is the ceiling?
What are the building dimensions?
What type of work happens there?
Is this a retrofit or new construction?
What light level do you want?
Do you need motion sensors or emergency battery backup?
From there, we create a lighting layout designed specifically for your project.

Final Thoughts

The goal isn’t simply to sell lights.

The goal is to get your project right the first time.

Good lighting changes how a space feels. It improves productivity, reduces frustration, lowers energy costs, and gives people pride in their workspace.

After helping customers for more than 15 years, I’ve learned that we’re not just selling lighting.

We’re selling confidence in the entire process.

If you’re planning a shop, warehouse, garage, or commercial project, we’d be happy to help you design a lighting layout that’s tailored to your space.
